HAN Gateway Architecture: Future-Proofing Considerations

To enable demand-side management capabilities, utilities need to extend the connectivity of their smart metering network to devices in the home. This extension requires a gateway to connect the home area network (HAN) with the smart meter neighborhood area network (NAN). There are two alternative architectures that specify the location of the gateway – one places the HAN gateway in the meter and one place the HAN gateway in an in-home device. This white paper is designed to assist Smart Grid architects compares and contrasts these two architectures and analyzes the implications for flexibility, connectivity, and cost.
